* Use member function instead of template function to resolve native interfaceTor Arne Vestbø2021-07-171-4/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | The use of a freestanding function is not needed now that the name doesn't alias the nativeInterface accessor function, and was just adding complexity to the machinery. People not familiar with the code will have an easier time following the flow through the helper member function, and we no longer need to declare our own export macros. * Enable glyph cache workaround for Apple M-family of GPUsTor Arne Vestbø2021-06-181-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Without the workaround, and when using a Core GL profile, we hit a code path in QSGOpenGLDistanceFieldGlyphCache::resizeTexture() that produced corrupt glyphs on M1 hardware. We fix this by enabling the workaround, so that the user doesn't have to set QT_ENABLE_GLYPH_CACHE_WORKAROUND themselves. None-Core contexts do not have this problem, but the logic in QOpenGLContext does not account for recreated contexts with different formats, so we can't limit the workaround to Core formats only. With the unified memory architecture of the M1 hardware, the workaround should have limited negative effects. In Qt 6 this is not a problem, since Qt Declarative effectively always uses the workaround code-path, but it's worth recording the fact that we need the workaround. * Type erase native interfaces via string instead of typeidTor Arne Vestbø2021-05-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | The latter forces users to build with RTTI enabled, as the typeid use is in our public headers. Surprisingly this is also the case even without instantiating the relevant template. * Rejig native interface plumbingTor Arne Vestbø2021-05-121-0/+26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The initial approach for providing public access to native interfaces via T::nativeInteface<I>() was based on the template not being defined, and then having explicit instantiations of the supported types in a source file, so that the accessors were exported and available to the user. This worked fine for "simple" types such as QOpenGLContext and QOffscreenSurface, but presented a problem in the context of classes with subclasses, such as Q{Core,Gui}Application. To ensure that a native interface for QCoreApplication was accessible both from QCoreApplication and its subclasses, while at the same time preventing a native interface for QGuiApplication to be accessible for QCoreApplication, the nativeInterface() template function had to be declared in each subclass. Which in turn meant specializing each native interface once for each subclass it was available in. This quickly became tedious to manage, and the requirements for exposing a new native interface wasn't very clear with all these template specializations and explicit instantiations spread around. To improve on this situation, while also squashing a few other birds at the same time, we change the approach to use type erasure. The definition of T::nativeInteface<I>() is now inline, passing on the requested interface to a per type (T, not I) helper function, with the interface type flattened to a std::type_info. The type_info requested by the user is then compared to the available types in a single per-type (T) "switch statement", which is a lot easier to follow for someone trying to trace the logic of how a native interface is resolved. We can safely rely on type_info being stable between the user application and the Qt library as a result of exporting the type info for each native interface, by explicitly ensuring they have a key function. This is the same mechanism that ensures we can safely dynamic_cast these interfaces, even across library boundaries. The use of a free standing templated helper function instead of a member function in the type T, is to avoid shadowing issues, and to not pollute the class namespace of T with the helper function. Since we are already changing the plumbing for how a user resolves a native interface for a type T, we take the opportunity to add a few extra safeguards to the machinery. First, we add a static assert in the T::nativeInteface<I>() definition, that ensures that only compatible interfaces, as declared by the interface themselves, are allowed. This ensures a compile time error when an incompatible interface is requested, which improves on the link time errors we had prior to this patch, and also offsets the one downside of type erasure, namely that errors are only caught at runtime. Secondly, each interface meant for public consumption through T::nativeInteface<I>() is declared with a revision, which is checked when requesting the interface. This allows us to bump the revision when we make breaking changes to the interface that would have otherwise been binary incompatible. Since the user will never see this interface due to the revision check, they will not end up calling methods that have been removed or renamed. One advantage of moving to a type-erased approach for the plumbing is that we're not longer exposing the native interface types as part of the T::nativeInteface symbols. This means that if we ever want to rename a native interface, the only exported symbol that the user code relies on is the type info. Renaming is then possible by just exporting the type info for the old interface, but leaving it empty. Since no class in Qt implements the old native interface, the user will just get a nullptr back, similarly to bumping the revision of an interface. * Introduce QWindow::paintEvent with QPA plumbingTor Arne Vestbø2020-08-261-6/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The explicit paint event on QtGui and QPA level allows us to untangle the expose event, which today has at least 3 different meanings. It also allows us to follow the platform more closely in its semantics of when painting can happen. On some platforms a paint can come in before a window is exposed, e.g. to prepare the first frame. On others a paint can come in after a window has been de-exposed, to save a snapshot of the window for use in an application switcher or similar. The expose keeps its semantics of being a barrier signaling that the application can now render at will, for example in a threaded render loop. There are two compatibility code paths in this patch: 1. For platform plugins that do not yet report the PaintEvents capability, QtGui will synthesize paint events on the platform's behalf, based on the existing expose events coming from the platform. 2. For applications that do not yet implement paintEvent, QtGui will send expose events instead, ensuring the same behavior as before. For now none of the platform plugins deliver paint events natively, so the first compatibility code path is always active. * Introduce platform API abstraction for QOpenGLContextTor Arne Vestbø2020-07-021-92/+25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The API is available by including qopenglcontext.h as usual, but scoped in the QPlatformInterface namespace. The namespace exposes platform specific type-safe interfaces that provide: a) Factory functions for adopting native contexts, e.g. QCocoaGLContext::fromNative(nsContext, shareContext); b) Access to underlying native handles, e.g. openGLContext->platformInterface<QCocoaGLContext>->nativeContext() c) Platform specific functionality, e.g. static QWGLContext::openGLModuleHandle() openGLContext->platformInterface<QEGLContext>->doSomething(); The platform interfaces live close to the classes they extend, removing the need for complex indirection and plumbing, and avoids kitchen-sink modules and APIs such as the extras modules, QPlatformFunctions, or QPlatformNativeInterface. In the case of QOpenGLContext these platform APIs are backed by the platform plugin, so dynamic_cast is used to ensure the platform plugin supports the requested interface, but this is and implementation detail. The interface APIs are agnostic to where the implementation lives, while still being available to the user as part of the APIs they extend/augment. The documentation will be restored when the dust settles. Task-number: QTBUG-80233 Change-Id: Iac612403383991c4b24064332542a6e4bcbb3293 Reviewed-by: Friedemann Kleint <Friedemann.Kleint@qt.io>
* Enable access to the VAO resolvers through QOpenGLContextPrivateGiuseppe D'Angelo2020-06-221-0/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a commit in preparation for an upcoming change in QtQuick. We want to store the resolved functions for managing VAOs somewhere; the "least worst" choice is next to the all other function resolvers, which are in QOpenGLContext(Private). To avoid moving the VAO resolvers themselves, leave a hook in QOGLCPrivate, similar to e.g. the texture function resolvers. The hook gets populated when the VAO resolvers for a given context are requested. This removes memory management burden from the users of those functions (again, just like other function resolvers), and makes the initialization of the functions automatic. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The context—which lives in QtGui—now knows nothing about versioned functions. This changes the public API for getting version functions for a context. [ChangeLog][QtGui][OpenGL] QOpenGLContext::versionFunctions() has been removed. QOpenGLVersionFunctionsFactory::get() from the QtOpenGL module should be used instead. Previously one would call context->versionFunctions<QOpenGLFunctions_4_0_Core>(); Which now becomes QOpenGLVersionFunctionsFactory::get<QOpenGLFunctions_4_0_Core>(context); The rest of the API should be identical. Since glgen no longer compiles, and the links to its input (gl.spec and gl.tm) are dead, I've edited the previously generated files manually. If glgen is fixed, it should be quite easy to make it generate the new way. Both eglfs and wasm lack the concept of true raster windows. A QWindow with RasterSurface is rendered with OpenGL no matter what. The two platforms took two different approaches to work around the rest of the machinery: - wasm disabled the QOpenGLContext warning for non-OpenGL QWindows, - eglfs forced the QWindow surfaceType to OpenGLSurface whenever it was originally set to RasterSurface. Now, the latter breaks since c4e9eabc309a275efc222f4127f31ba4677259b7, leaving all raster window applications failing on eglfs, because flush in the backingstore is now checking the surface type and disallows OpenGLSurface windows. (just like how QOpenGLContext disallows RasterSurface windows) To solve all this correctly, introduce a new platform capability, OpenGLOnRasterSurface, and remove the special handling in the platform plugins. | | | | | | | | | | | | | Seems this issue is still there with Adreno 5xx and 6xx is suspected to have it as well (no device to test though), so added both 5xx and 6xx to cover these. Updated 30x to 3xx in order to cover Adreno 320 and 330 as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adreno. | * iOS: Harden logic for when it's safe to use the graphics hardwareTor Arne Vestbø2017-12-071-1/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To fix QTBUG-52493 we tied the exposed state of a window to the application being in the foreground. This has the result of a visible flash of black between hiding the launch screen and showing the first frame of the application, as the application is still waiting for UIApplicationStateActive to begin rendering, which happens after iOS hides the launch screen. According to the iOS OpenGL ES Programming Guide, it should be safe to render GL in UIApplicationStateInactive as well, and even in UIApplicationStateBackground, as long as the rendering finishes before the UIApplicationDidEnterBackgroundNotification returns. To ensure that we catch any bugs in this area, checks have been added that verify that no rendering happens while in the background state. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The glyph cache resize is clearly doing something that is not actually legal with OpenGL ES. Until this gets investigated properly, add the Vivante GC2000 (found in the commonly used i.MX6 quad) to the list since reports show that the issue occurs there as well.
