Qt for Python users reading the documentation assume that int(0) can
be passed for pointer parameters. Use the newly introduced \nullptr to
disambiguate this.
In a follow-up step, the \nullptr macro can be defined as None
when generating the Qt for Python documentation.

The code used to fall back to anonymous login independently for username
and password; however, it should only use a fall-back password if the
username is missing or (case-insensitive) "anonymous". When a
non-anonymous username is given without password, we should simply skip
he PASS message to FTP.
If the FTP server requests a password, in the latter case, QFtp will
signal authenticationRequired; in all cases, if the server rejects the
given credentials, QFtp signals authenticationFailed. Either way, the
client code can then query the user for credentials as usual.

A default-constructed static QBasicAtomicInt at function scope
will be dynamically initialized. It will still be zero-initialized,
but at least GCC adds guard variables for such objects.
When using aggregate initialization, the guard disappears.

A variable of static storage duration that is not zero-initialized
takes up space in the DATA segment of the executable. By making the
counters start at zero and adding the initial value afterwards, we
move them over to the BSS segment, which does not take up space in
the executable.
Wrap atomics used across function boundaries into small functions,
to avoid code duplication and to increase readability.

The check is bogus anyway. It was bogus when it was added. The bug is
not because of "GCC on IRIX", it's simply a GCC bug and was probably
tied to some GCC versions. It should have been reported and followed up.
I don't even remember what GCC versions we had on the IRIX machines
(plastkrakk, I can't remember the other two machine names). But I could
bet they were GCC 3.4 or 4.0.

Most FTP servers do not support the ABOR command (they don't process
control channel traffic until the data channel is finished). Or they
require the telnet IP & sync procedure on the control channel (this
requires sending TCP urgent data, which we do not support).
Following behaviour of most browsers and GUI FTP clients, abort
downloads by resetting the data channel.
Abort of uploads needs no change, because the client closes the data
channel rather than the server.

Certain FTP servers refuse the SIZE command in ASCII mode (proftpd)
or refuse the SIZE command in ASCII mode for large files.
This is a security feature, as the SIZE command requires reading
the whole file and counting line ends which can cause denial of
services. In binary mode, the file size on disc is reported, which
is a relatively quick operation.
Qt had two problems here:
1. when size command fails, the total size was reported as -1,
whereas the documentation of QFtp::dataTransferProgress states
it should be reported as 0 (so that QProgressDialog can display
a wait note rather than progress bar)
2. SIZE command was sent before setting the type of the transfer
to ASCII / Binary. This is a problem as the size reported by
the server is incorrect. Also it usually means sending ASCII
SIZE for Binary transfers, which results in the 550 error on
FTP servers with DOS protection.
