This fixes is by keeping track of the longest substring used, as well as the length of the string. If the length is larger then twice the length of the longest substring, we simplify the string. This reduces the overhead of an addition to allocating a new GC'ed object. To avoid huge chains of linked strings, we use a depth counter, and flatten the string once the depth reaches 16.
